Idolatry is the belief in, and worship of, any concept that is not a true reflection of God. Such false beliefs include constructs like God being vengeful, or wrathful, or separated from us, demanding eternal damnation in the fires of hell. And most emphatically, not believing we are one with Him. To do so brings condemnation and destruction upon us, not from God, but as a direct consequence of being in a wrong mindset, like putting your hand in a fire – your thought, your action, your pain. Our bad thinking not only causes bad consequences for us, but also pain and anguish for others. This explains Matthew 7:13-14 where Jesus speaks of the narrow path that leads to life and the broad path that leads to destruction, bearing in mind it is not speaking of eternal pits of fire. As Francois du Toit says about 2 Corinthians 13:5-8, “Self-examination has nothing to do with finding hidden sins and flaws in you; it is all about realizing Christ in you!” You!- the physical embodiment of God (for you are the temple of the Holy Spirit).
