‘Jesus is the reason for the season.’ This is often the platitude given for our Christmas celebration. But is it an honest statement? Surely we are celebrating the ‘Christ Mass’, that time set aside for the profound religious recognition of the nativity of our Saviour? And yet, what do the scriptures say? The only account is from the Gospel of Luke, who tells us that the heavens and angels declared, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:14). This then is the true message of Christmas – Peace!
It is true that Jesus is the one who brought us salvation from the captivity of our sinful concepts about ourselves. And that this was his mandated mission ‘to destroy the works of Satan’ (1 John 3:8), and to set the captives free (Isaiah 61:1). On that night You-manity was born again in the Last Adam. On that night the wealth of heaven was restored to YOU. All this was so that you would understand your existence within the restful peace of your original godness, no longer having to strive against yourself, your Father in Heaven, the rest of humanity, or creation. Christmas is about celebrating the peace of knowing the true YOU!
